What Does Your Vagina Have to Do With Your Vagus Nerve? More Than You Think.

Numy

Numy

As you know, it’s pretty rare in my world for me to recommend a product unless I am absolutely head over heels in love with it.

Which is why I have to tell the women in my world about BOLD by NUMY.

I found BOLD through a Facebook ad that positioned it not simply as a sex toy, but as a device designed to help regulate the nervous system through deep vaginal stimulation and its potential connection to the vagus nerve.

That got my attention.

As a sex and intimacy coach and longtime Tantra practitioner, I’m fascinated by the connection between sexual pleasure, the pelvic bowl and the nervous system. So when some of the videos in the ad actually talked about the vagus nerve and the science behind what they were claiming, I was intrigued enough to plunk down my $79.

A week later, the device arrived.

One of NUMY’s claims is that BOLD isn’t, per se, a sex toy. They recommend using it for about 15 minutes before bed as a way to relax and regulate your nervous system.

The reviews were amazing.

I was still skeptical.

Let me tell you: I’m not skeptical anymore.

FIRST THE PLEASURE PART

BOLD provides very deep internal stimulation through a bending and pulsing motion while simultaneously stimulating the perineal area and the clitoris.

It has a variety of intensities and patterns that I found incredibly satisfying—and, yes, very arousing.

One thing I particularly love is that the clitoral portion is very flexible, so rather than forcing your anatomy to fit the toy, you can position it where it works best for your body.

But what surprised me most was the depth of the internal stimulation.

Initially, I thought I was experiencing really intense G-spot stimulation.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that what I experienced may have involved much deeper vaginal and cervical stimulation. These were deep, intense internal orgasms that felt quite different from primarily  clitoral orgasms.

And all of that would have been enough for me to recommend the device.

But here’s where things got really interesting.

Then I went to sleep

I slept like a log.

And I mean deep sleep—without the usual disturbances that are unfortunately pretty normal for me. No 3 a.m. awakening. No lying there waiting for my brain to decide whether we were going back to sleep.

I just slept.

But the biggest surprise came the next morning.

When I woke up, I could literally feel more openness and spaciousness in my pelvic bowl. It felt as though some very deep muscles that I hadn’t even realized I was holding had finally let go.

And then I noticed my jaw.

I have dealt with a chronically tight jaw and TMJ for years, despite orthodontia and night guards. That morning, my jaw felt amazing. No pain. And I had more range of motion than I can ever remember having.

Which Daren definitely appreciated.😏

So what in the world does my vagina have to do with my jaw?

That was the question that sent me down the research rabbit hole.

And what I found was fascinating.

Researchers Barry Komisaruk and Beverly Whipple have spent decades studying the neuroscience of female sexual pleasure. Their research has demonstrated that sensory information from deep vaginal and cervical stimulation can reach the brain through the vagus nerve, providing a pathway that can bypass the spinal cord.

That doesn’t prove that BOLD “resets the vagus nerve,” and I haven’t found clinical research on BOLD itself demonstrating that it does.

So I’m not willing to make that claim.

But it does mean there is legitimate neuroscience behind the connection between deep vaginal/cervical stimulation and the vagus nerve.

And then there was my jaw.

Emerging research has found an association between pelvic-floor function and temporomandibular disorders—the group of conditions we commonly call TMJ.

One recent study found that treating and relaxing the jaw actually resulted in a measurable decrease in resting pelvic-floor muscle activity.

That study looked at the connection in the opposite direction from what I experienced, so we can’t conclude that relaxing my pelvic floor caused my jaw to release.

But it certainly made my experience a whole lot more interesting.

And then there’s the sleep angle.

Research is also beginning to show associations between sexual activity, orgasm and improvements in certain measures of sleep quality and sleep efficiency.

None of this proves exactly why I slept so deeply, why my pelvis felt so open the next morning, or why my jaw suddenly felt better than it had in years.

But it tells me that what I experienced isn’t nearly as far-fetched as it might initially sound.

Tantra has known something about this for a long time

As a Tantra practitioner, the idea that our genitals, pelvic bowl, breath, nervous system and the rest of our body are deeply interconnected isn’t exactly ground-breaking news.

We’ve been working experientially with those connections for a very long time.

What fascinates me is watching Western science begin to explore the physiological mechanisms behind experiences that embodied traditions have been describing for centuries.

Do I know whether BOLD actually “reset my nervous system”?

No.

What I do know is that I experienced incredibly pleasurable deep vaginal and cervical stimulation, powerful orgasms, one of the deepest nights of sleep I’ve had in a very long time, a remarkable feeling of openness in my pelvis—and an unexpected release in a jaw that has been chronically tight for years.

That’s enough to make me keep using it.

And enough to make this very reluctant product recommender tell the women in my world:

This one is worth knowing about.

Gift Ideas to Titillate Your Lover This Holiday Season

Whatever flavor of holiday you celebrate, tis the season for sexy gifts.  Here are some I’m a fan of, and a few I hope I find under my tree! 😉

If you’re local to Asheville or visiting for the holidays, I highly recommend that your first stop be VaVaVooom, a woman-owned small business that offers a more upscale, tasteful experience than your usual sex shop.  All the toys are body-safe, and a quick stroll through the shop (there are now two locations) is enough to excite the senses.  If you’re not local, you can also check out their offerings online.  (The image above is of the Thistle & Spire Medusa bodysuit, which they carry.  They also have a wonderful selection of other lingerie and sexy apparel.)

Why’s This Box Buzzing?

For toys specifically, I recommend the Womanizer clit suction, the Rose toy, We Vibe for couples, and g spot wand.  For someone with a prostate, I’ve heard great things about the Aneros Helix Trident (prostate massager). For something a bit more luxe, there’s a variety of male prostate massagers from LELO with features like remotes controls and perineum stimulators that add extra intensity to the experience.

If your home could use some sexy furniture and accessories, I recommend the yoga sex chair, the liberator waterproof blanket, and the liberator wedge.

And I firmly believe that a fuzzy massage mitt belongs in every home!  I’m normally not a fan of fur, but these handmade ones are made from recycled fur coats.  If you prefer synthetic, these look lovely.

Give the Gift of Adventure

For a fun, spicy couples adventure, you might check out bondage rope from Twisted Monk.  To learn some basics, you might check out this book or these videos.

If you’re in Asheville, a local glass blower offers a sexy couples glass-blowing class called “Blow Me.”  As you might surmise, it’s flirty and filled with innuendo, and you get to take home several hand-made creations.

The Adventure Challenge offers fun date ideas, some spicy, some sweet.

And for the ultimate couples adventure, there’s room for one more couple in my Costa Rica vacation retreat coming up in February.  If that date doesn’t work for you, I also offer private passionate intimacy retreats in Asheville.

Learn Something New

If you want to learn more about sexuality (learning leads to doing!), consider a subscription to OMGYes.  It offers offers video demonstrations of techniques, animations, and what feels like an endless amount of learning for the curious-minded.

I’ve really been enjoying Layla Martin’s teachings, and I think any of her courses would make great gifts.

And, of course, there’s my best-selling book, Living an Orgasmic Life, which offers lots of information, some useful exercises to try with your lover, and much more.

Did I miss anything?  If you’ve got an idea for a sexy gift, let me know!

How Do Men Become Better Lovers?

A friend of mine has dipped her toes back into the pool of online dating, and Oh Boy, is that pool in need of a thorough cleaning!

She forwarded some of the messages she received, and we marveled at what seems to pass for masculinity these days.  As a sex coach, what I’m seeing is deeply disturbing and concerning.

One of the messages my friend received started off by exclaiming about how wonderful she is (which is true).  But then at the end, he told her, “Oh and by the way, I hope you’re on hormone therapy because I really enjoy sexual intimacy.”

This was his FIRST MESSAGE!  To a STRANGER!

And mind you, my friend isn’t menopausal or even perimenopausal!  This guy was just making a totally inept and wrong assumption.

Whyyyyy?!?

Do better, men!

While this guy seems like a special level of ignorant, part of his problem is one that I see frequently in so many men.

There’s a way in which many men have been socialized to believe that women are tools for their pleasure.

I don’t blame men for this since porn has dominated the way in which many men think they should be having sex.

Lots of fast and hard thrusting and getting off in a similar way to masturbating.

And, frankly, this is just bad sex.  Not that hard and fast thrusting is never wanted or warranted.  It is!  Sometimes!  But if that’s all you’re doing, your partner is probably not feeling satisfied (and might even become irritated and sore).

I’m sorry if this is news.

Unless you’re the guy sending my friend clueless messages.  Then I’ll say:

Yikes on bikes, dude!

Your misconceptions about sex are going to ensure a crappy sex life, (if any) for you.

The good news is that no matter how you’ve been having sex up to this point, you can learn to do better.

There are skills you can learn that will make your lover crave you!

In my retreats, I spend a lot of time teaching these skills.

But if you haven’t signed up for a retreat yet (and what are you waiting for?!) but you want a little taste of what you might learn, let me pass on some teachings by a fellow coach, Layla Martin.

Layla is a tantric sex coach and teacher, and I’ve been savoring her podcast lately.  The one I last listened to, which delighted me endlessly, is her interview with researcher and author Jamie Wheal.  The episode, titled “Why F**king Better Will Ultimately Save The Planet,” is a super juicy dive into the research about sacred sex practices that will dramatically improve not just your sex life, but also everything!  It’s intense, but fun, lively, and so inspiring.

For a shorter and more accessible lesson for men on how to become a better lover, I recommend “Sex Tips for the Divine Masculine.”  In that episode, Layla Martin lays out a foundation of ten simple steps men can take.

I’m not saying these steps could necessarily fix the guy who messaged my friend, but they wouldn’t hurt.

Add Some Sêxy Tools to Your Relationship Tool-Kit

I love my husband, but I really don’t desire sex anymore.  And I feel bad for it!  I don’t think it’s his fault.  He treats me well, and he’s a great parent and partner.  But there’s just none of the spice we used to feel for each other.

I can’t tell you how many times I hear some version of this.  Usually, couples experiencing this kind of sexual disinterest aren’t falling apart, but they’re also not thriving.  Few know what steps to take to fix it.

The usual couples’ advice is to prioritize time together, schedule dates, etc.  And all of these are great… except for one thing.  So often, as we age, we get stuck in the same patterns.  If all our “dates” are takeout and Netflix, that’s not going to add any spice.  (Even if it’s Thai!)

One of my solutions as a coach is to gently guide couples to learn and try new things together.

While you can make this work with any new thing (take surfing lessons!  learn Argentinian tango!), I find that the most direct route to sexual spice is to add some sexy tools to your relationship toolbox.

You mean, Like a Screwdriver…?

Sort of, yes!  😉

Which sexy new tool depends on your and your partner’s sexual styles, but often couples I work with gain a lot from exploring tantra and energetic sex.  Other couples might benefit more from learning erotic massage.

At my upcoming Passionate in Paradise vacation retreat in Costa Rica, I will be doing hands-on demos of these practices with a teaching partner, and we’ll show you the magic of tantric sex and energetic orgasms.  We’ll also demonstrate how to massage a cock and a pussy in ways that will bring intense new levels of pleasure to your relationship.

What if I’m Shy?!

If you’re shy, no worries!  I won’t make you do these things in front of others.  But you will get to see them up close and personal and be able to take the skills you learn back to the bedroom to try out on each other.

So please, over Valentine’s Week 2024, join me in Costa Rica at an incredible five star resort, where you can safely (and sensuously!) try out some sexy new tools.
